Stamford Lakes Project:
As Stamford Park lakes are not being used to their full potential and are an ongoing historical concern the Council have requested us to use our extensive knowledge and creativity to see if we can improve the lakes and the surrounding environment. In May 2007 the council have applied to the lottery Heritage for funding for the project.
In 2003 various management techniques and work was carried out in order to assess the potential for improving the appeal of the lakes. Catch Nature then set up the lakes project to demonstrate restoration and management techniques for the two lakes. It may be that restoration work needs to be phased over a number of years, whilst the maintenance actions will need to occur throughout the year.
When attempting to restore a lake to a healthy condition much depends on available resources and what the lake is used for, with Stamford Park Boating Lake we also had to include the seasonal boating activities which are operational from April to September, this has been implemented into our management plan.
It is easier, and cheaper to keep a lake habitat in a healthy condition by carrying out regular maintenance than it is to try and bring it back from its degraded state, our approach to management is based on an understanding of the history, location and awareness of lake ecology, therefore in order for lake management to succeed we must address the public to understanding how the lake works. People affect the lake system and they should agree with the objectives for the lake and understand the management actions needed. |
