Celmac Angling:
Making of Celmac Angling Club
Over the past 2 years Catch Nature has been working on behalf of Celmac A.C. which has involved us liaising with the WCEC Architects and the developer of the new Morrison super store in Denton.
The existing Celmac pond will need to be filled in and a purpose built fishing pond is being built to replace it, so the club can continue running.
We have been working alongside WCEC Architects, planning out the best way to tackle the removal of the fish and the design of the new pond.
We have also been working with a company called Land and water, Civil engineering systems that specialise in pond and lake construction, this partnership has created the workforce behind what will be Celmac’s new fishing pond.
With our plans, MMG and WCEC involvement we came up with the perfect pond design for Celmac Angling Club.
The New Pond
The pond will provide approximately 718 square metres of water for fishing with a general depth of
2 metres.
Land for the proposed new pond

Proposed Facilities

Fishing Platforms
There will be 17 fishing platforms level with the pathway, which will be adequately spaced at 6m, and purpose built to suit able and disabled anglers.
The platform is 2m x 1m x 1m and is made out of weldmesh gabion which is filled with stone, then compacted with a type 1 fill to create a level area.
Path way
A new path way is also being constructed which will give adequate access for wheelchairs.
Area Surrounding the Pond
This will be grass seeded and landscaped, which will include trees and shrubs.
Fence and Gates
The pond area will be surrounded by a 1.8m high fence. The entrance gates will also be fitted with high security locks.
Marginal Planting
Land and water are supplying and fitting the coil fibre rolls will be placed in-between each platform at the water line, the coils contain water plants that will, in time, grow and help to stop the bank erosion.
Toilet Facilities
There will be toilets on site which will be purpose built to make it easily accessible to the disabled.
Car Parking
There will be 10 car park spaces at the side of the building.
The Fish in the Existing Pond Have Been Removed
The fish were removed on Thursday 28th November 2003 by The Environmental Agency and placed in a safe haven till the new pond is constructed; the fish will be then be replaced in the new pond. The fish are going to be returned to the new pond in the October and a temporary feeding program will be set up by the committee until the pond fully opens.

There was 6,500 fish removed from the pond which included:
- 4816 Roach
- 586 Rudd
- 356 Bream
- 428 Perch
- 88 Mirror Carp
- 81 Gudgeon
- 46 Brown Goldfish
- 32 Crucian Carp
- 15 Tench
- 3 Koi Carp
- 1 Common Carp
In January 2004 the existing pond was drained, the silt was 18ft deep at the bottom end of the pond, which has meant that the contractors have had to remove all the silt and fill in with hardcore so the land would be suitable for the new Morrison’s Superstore to be built.

Silt Being Removed
This picture show’s the silt being dug out of the pond, the silt had built up to a incredible level over the years.
It was left on site temporary to dry out, which reduced its weight and bulk, making it easier to transport from site.

Being filled with hardcore
This picture shows the pond being filled in with type 1 fill,
There were thousands of tons delivered to site.

The New Pond
Throughout February and March Kiers the developers will be creating a new pond for the members of Celmac A.C. Close liaison has already taken place between Celmac A.C./Catch Nature and Wm Morrisons advisers. Contact has also been made with the Environment Agency regarding fish reintroduction to the new pond. Further consultation will be necessary with these parties including lease agreement, landscape, restocking and feeding program.
Please can we remind members NOT to visit the site during the construction of the pond, the committee members will keep you updated at the Denton West End Club meetings on the second Tuesday of every month.

Inlet and silt tank
This picture shows that the water supply will run from the near by playing fields. The silt tank will help prevent the pond from silting up; this tank will need to be cleaned regular.
